Technologies Driving IIAs

There are four main areas of emerging Internet technologies:

  • Emerging data technologies provide better ways of locating and communicating information from disparate sources
  • Emerging middleware technologies significantly expand the capabilities of distributed, loosely coupled systems to interoperate, cooperate in exchanging messages and events, and process complex work flows.
  • Emerging applications technologies significantly improve how applications access and present information to users, and empower users to act on that information.
  • Emerging networking technologies significantly increase the speed, effectiveness, and reach of existing networking technologies.

Integrated Internet Applications (IIA) are enabled by three of these technologies: Rich Internet Applications, Internet Middleware, and Web Services.

Rich Internet Applications significantly improve how application information is presented to the user.

Internet Middleware significantly improves how information about the outside world and changes to that world are communicated to the user and to system components.

Web Services provide a rich set of building blocks for IIAs, connected via Internet Middleware.
